Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Show

“The Human Fuse” sounds more like a moniker for a superhero than a mere mortal, but taking into account what Brian Miser does and has been doing since his high school days, the name is more than fitting. After more than eight years with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus, Brian has launched himself out of his self-designed and built canon more than 6,000 times.

This year for the 141st edition of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Fully Charged show at the Staples Center July 20-24, Brian brings a brand new act and new levels of energy, adrenalin and risk-taking! With a jolt seven times the force of gravity, Brian, The Human Fuse, will arc through the air 110 feet across the arena at nearly 65 miles per hour from a self-made, supersized, human crossbow…on fire!

Defying the laws of physics and gravity almost every day requires pinpoint accuracy, so nerves are still a factor in Brian’s work. “You’re pretty sure you know where you’re going to land,” he says, “but sometimes you worry you’ll be a little short or a foot over.” Still, Brian says, “It’s hard to beat flying through the air, no strings attached. To me, it’s the ultimate.”

And what about the fire, an added component to this new act? “The thing with flying with fire is that you’re moving so quickly that the flames are behind you, but when you land they come up over you,” Brian says. “It’s the most exhilarating thing.”

Local Scene Night at Music in the Zoo this Friday

Get wild with eight popular Los Angeles indie bands who’ll the spotlight under the stars during “MUSIC IN THE ZOO” — LOCAL SCENE NIGHT on Friday, July 15, 2011 at a special after-hours event at the L.A. Zoo, 5333 Zoo Drive in Griffith Park.

A line-up of performances will take place from 6 to 9 pm throughout the Los Angeles Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and while you’re there you can view many of the Zoo’s animals until 8 p.m. and enjoy an eclectic array of food and beverages, including a beer and wine bar, kids meals and sweet selections. Pack a picnic if you like!

The line-up includes post-punk guitar band ABE VIGODA; BIG SEARCH, known for black metal/bluegrass; HANDS, featuring indie rock; POLLYN, offering atmospheric tunes; garage/psych minded ALLAH LAS; Kitten, featuring bluesy, alternative, rock influenced music; Mini Mansions, which plays psych pop; and folk-rock band HoneyHoney (pictured here).

Admission to “Music in the Zoo” for Zoo members is $13 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 15. Admission for non-members is $17 for adults and $11 for children ages 6 to 15. Children 5 and under are free.

Learn about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling!

It’s never too early for kids to learn about reducing, reusing and recycling! And the Ninth Annual 2011 Bureau of Sanitation Open Houses in the City of Los Angeles is the perfect event to do it. The City of Los Angeles will opens its doors at each of its six district yards in Sun Valley, Northridge, Lincoln Heights, South Los Angeles, San Pedro, and West Los Angeles in a series of weekend events starting Saturday, May 14, 2011.

The Sanitation Open Houses will treat visitors to trash truck and equipment demonstrations in addition to guided facility tours, information booths, recycling games with prizes and refreshments. The city’s recycling mascots, Mr. Recycle and Robo Blue will be on hand to engage the next generation of residents by bringing recycling to life through imagination and fun.

“The Open Houses showcase Sanitation’s residential collection programs and raise awareness of reducing, reusing and recycling by making real the connections to the economic, environmental and social benefits of reducing waste,” said Cynthia M. Ruiz, president of the Board of Public Works. “Individual responsibility and volunteer actions coupled with ongoing collaborations between residents, businesses and government, continue to successfully sustain community environments and deliver a better quality of life through a cleaner and greener Los Angeles.”

Fruit and non-fruit trees will be available to City of Los Angeles residents through the Million Trees L.A. program on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.
