Barnsdall hilltop garden will be the site of an afternoon filled with amazing food, wine, beer, music and family art activities by Barnsdall Art Sundays, Sunday, May 15, 2011 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The event will showcase the best of independent restaurants primarily from the neighborhoods of Silver Lake, Echo Park, Atwater, Eagle Rock, Los Feliz, Downtown, and Highland Park. Our taste-size portions let you sample many different restaurants and find new venues for eating out, while each participating restaurant will have the opportunity to provide samples of their signature dishes and discover new customers.

KCRW DJ Garth Trinidad will deliver a unique fusion of world rhythm and beats from 2-4pm.

VIP “Pharmacie” cocktail tasting with mixologist Talmadge Lowe of Heirloom L.A. 1-3pm.

Family Art Activity: Barnsdall Arts Sundays will be setting up a free family art workshop from 2-4pm!

Book Signing: In addition to our tasting event, Skylight books will be joining us for an author signing event with local authors Jimmy Williams & Susan Heeger, Randy Clemens and Lina Lecaro.

Going Green: Taste of the Eastside has partnered with SustainLA to develop and execute a resource recovery (waste management) plan for the event. In keeping with our goal to minimize our footprint, SustainLA will be advising us on how waste from the event can be diverted from landfills through recycling, composting, and by making adjustments to our plans and purchases.

Discover Recycling at 2011 Bureau of Sanitation Open Houses
Learn about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling!

It’s never too early for kids to learn about reducing, reusing and recycling! And the Ninth Annual 2011 Bureau of Sanitation Open Houses in the City of Los Angeles is the perfect event to do it. The City of Los Angeles will opens its doors at each of its six district yards in Sun Valley, Northridge, Lincoln Heights, South Los Angeles, San Pedro, and West Los Angeles in a series of weekend events starting Saturday, May 14, 2011.

The Sanitation Open Houses will treat visitors to trash truck and equipment demonstrations in addition to guided facility tours, information booths, recycling games with prizes and refreshments. The city’s recycling mascots, Mr. Recycle and Robo Blue will be on hand to engage the next generation of residents by bringing recycling to life through imagination and fun.

“The Open Houses showcase Sanitation’s residential collection programs and raise awareness of reducing, reusing and recycling by making real the connections to the economic, environmental and social benefits of reducing waste,” said Cynthia M. Ruiz, president of the Board of Public Works. “Individual responsibility and volunteer actions coupled with ongoing collaborations between residents, businesses and government, continue to successfully sustain community environments and deliver a better quality of life through a cleaner and greener Los Angeles.”

Fruit and non-fruit trees will be available to City of Los Angeles residents through the Million Trees L.A. program on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. In conjunction with the tree adoption opportunities, the Bureau of Sanitation will giveaway free mulch and compost recycled from its green waste program. Young visitors will also have the opportunity to learn how to plant small vegetable plants, take them home and transplant them in their gardens.
