National Train Day 2011

Fourth Annual National Train Day Pulls Into Union Station on May 7, 2011

For some kids, everyday is train day; but once a year for the past four years Amtrak has been calling “all kids — young and old” to join the coast-to-coast celebration in one day dedicated to train love. On Saturday, May 7th, hundreds of National Train Day festivities are taking place across the country including four major events in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Chicago.

In Los Angeles, Union Station will be the venue for free live entertainment by Disney Junior’s Jake and the Neverland Pirates band, interactive and educational exhibits, kids’ activities, model train displays and tours of Amtrak equipment, freight and commuter trains, and of notable private railroad cars, and much more.

Fun things to expect at National Train Day at Union Station:

* California Missions Exhibit
* East Meets West Exhibit
* State Partnership Display
* Amtrak High-Speed Rail Display
* K-9 Unit Demonstrations
* Amtrak: Dining the Rail Way
* Train Equipment Displays
* Model Train Displays
* Amtrak 40th Anniversary Display
* AmtraKids Depot
* Live Entertainment

You already know that your baby can communicate with you long before he can talk by using gestures like pointing, waving or blowing kisses. This class will enable you to teach your child to use natural and fun-to-learn American Sign Language (ASL) signs to tell you if he is hungry, thirsty, needs a diaper change, and other important stuff (“I see a cat/airplane/banana!”) until his verbal abilities catch up to his intellectual ones. Research suggests that compared to other children, infants who use sign language speak sooner and score higher on tests of language ability when tested after second grade, plus better communication makes for less frustrated babies and happier parents! This class uses the Baby Signing Time curriculum that encourages signing and speaking together – children hear the word, see the word, say the word, and model the word with their hands – and that uses ASL because, hey, why not learn a real language spoken by millions of people all over the world? Signing Time books, DVDs and other supporting materials will be available for sale, but are not required for participation.

Klezmer Juice is the musical vision of Gustavo Bulgach. Although Klezmer is commonly associated with our European immigrants, Jews at the turn of the century were settling all parts of the Americas—nowhere more so than Buenos Aries, Argentina. Bulgach was born and raised there—a community that includes 200,000 Jews, the most in any Latin American city. He learned Klezmer music from his family at a young age. But he was equally inspired by secular music of Argentina. And as he traveled around the globe, he found that Klezmer music is the “soundtrack of the Diaspora.” He also realized, quite early on, that if he created music that honored his two backgrounds, people would like the result.

Klezmer Juice represents the new generation of Jewish Soul musicians. With wide-ranging international backgrounds, a youthful vibe, and adding an exciting Latin undertone to their music, they see themselves as torchbearers of an ancient traditional craft that unites generations in spirit.

Pillow Fight Day Los Angeles Pershing Square

Pillow Fight Day comes to Pershing Square

Saturday, April 2nd is International Pillow Fight Day! Yes, there’s such a thing. And while pillow fights historically are the territory of childhood, this one’s for all ages. We don’t suggest involving your really little ones in this public pillow fight, but a spectator spot along the sidelines is an experience they won’t soon forget, if nothing else than for the sheer shock value (what? big people are hitting each other with pillows and laughing?) While you’re watching, know that cities across the world are participating in the exact same activity.

Think you and your teens are ready to participate? Here are the rules:

Rules:
1. “Don’t talk about [Pillow] Fight Club!” (especially to news media and civic authories)
2. Don’t be in location until the exact minute. (set your watches)
3. Hide your pillows.
4. Rush in screaming “PILLOW FIIIIIIGHT!!!!!”
5. After 15mins of excruciating fun, leave.
6. Stay off the road and sidewalk. (don’t make this a police issue)
7. Do NOT hit anyone with out a pillow! (this includes but is not limited to people with cameras, bystanders, civic authorities, cars, use common sense!!)
8. “If this is your first [time] at [Pillow] Fight Club, you have to fight.”

International Pillow Fight Day

535 S. Hill St., Los Angeles, 90014
