Concerts in the Park summer series runs for eight consecutive Thursday evenings of great music, vocals and entertainment!

The weekly concerts feature a variety of music including classic rock, country western and pop music. Dinner and refreshments will be on sale or attendees may bring their own picnic basket.

Lawn chairs and blankets are encouraged. Please refrain from bringing pets, barbeques or alcoholic beverages.

Enjoy the 2010 season of the Skirball’s free Sunset Concerts, celebrating musical traditions from around the globe, presented Thursday evenings, July 22–August 26! Kick back and groove or get up and dance to the tunes of an eclectic line-up of leading world musicians.

All Skirball galleries except Noah’s Ark are free and open until 10:00 p.m. during Sunset Concerts. Be sure to catch Monsters and Miracles: A Journey through Jewish Picture Books, Jews on Vinyl, and George Segal’s The Expulsion: With Photographs of the Artist at Work by Donald Lokuta.

Jorge Villarreal AKA Mr. Vallenato, is a Mexican American from Edinburg, Texas, who has played Colombian folk accordion music (Cumbia and Vallenato) since he was twelve. Don’t miss this lively outdoor show by the man known as the “Jimi Hendrix of the Accordion.”

DIRECTIONS: Enter UCLA campus lot 4 from Sunset Blvd. at Westwood Plaza and turn left into the Pay-By-Space area of the lot. Pay-By-Space parking is always available for Fowler visitors, regardless of whether the lot 4 parking kiosk is staffed! Automated pay stations in Pay-By-Space accept $1 and $5 bills and credit cards. Since 1997, Monday Morning Concerts has placed professional, world-class musicians, dancers, and actors in an intimate educational setting with children, ages five through eleven. Monday Morning Concerts consist of a performance, a brief history lesson on the musical and cultural style being presented, and a question and answer session with the performers. Often children are invited on stage to be part of the experience.

June 14, 2010 – String Family Players

String Family Players delivers fascinating performances made memorable by great music. Breaking down the stereotype that classical music is inaccessible, the ensemble offers the audience an unforgettable experience as they connect with students through their music. This dynamic string quintet ensemble, led by director David Young, includes two violins, a viola, a cello and a double bass to create fun and memorable concerts.

Twinkle Time is a fun fast pace, high-energy bilingual family musical.Twinkle and her friend’s set a fun foundation for growth that both children and their parents will enjoy. June 28, 2010 – Tina Guo

Cellist Tina Guo has toured the world and appeared with top name artists on television, recordings and in concerts. Equally serious and devoted to both her classical and contemporary music, Tina hopes to open the hearts and ears of audiences of seemingly juxtaposing genres. She continues to balance the spiritual and technical eloquence of classical music in manipulating the music and emotion within a defined boundary playing both acoustically and electrically.

July 12, 2010 – The Wonderelles

Get ready to rock around the clock with THE WONDERELLES! a wholesome and high-energy 50s/60s revue that is a blast from the past. From “Johnny Angel” to “Mustang Sally,” from “Sugartime” to “Proud Mary,” THE WONDERELLES give you a touch of nostalgia that will leave you with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

July 19, 2010 – Andy Rawn

Andy Rawn has a very beautiful dramatic voice in the tradition of Ezio Pinza, the most famous romantic basso of the 20th Century. Andy studied in Milan, Italy and in New York with Franco. Andy will use his baritone voice to sing songs from the American Song Book and talk about the history of that music.

July 26, 2010 – L.A. Pierce Symphonic Winds (Big Band)

Some of the members of the L.A. Pierce Symphonic Winds will gather this morning to demonstrate music from the Big Band Era. This seventeen piece ensemble consisting of trumpets, trombones, saxophones, piano, bass and drums will have plenty of swing music for all to enjoy.

Aug. 2, 2010 – Alex Nester

Alex Nester is UNIQUE…this very song from her new album describes this talented twenty-five-year-old songstress who is gifted beyond her years. Alex is doing was she was born to do: SING! But she doesn’t just sing…she writes, she creates, she communicates.

Aug. 9, 2010 – Wooley and Godwin

Wooden guitars and great songs…. The best musical magic always seems to happen in a living room with good friends, some wine, food and playing our favorite songs on a couple of beat-up acoustic guitars.

Aug. 16, 2010 – Kids of Rock Theatre

Kids of Rock Theatre practices about 10 hours a week and performs at various benefits. The group, Kids of Rock Theatre, is made up of students in a singing and dance workshop of the same name who will sing and dance to many pop songs of today.

Aug. 23, 2010 – Classical Blast

“Peter & The Wolf, A Classical blast of Mime and Music is an enchanting new program created and performed by internationally acclaimed mime artist, Sharon Diskin, and Juilliard trained classical pianist, Beth Sussman. This very unique entertainment combines the joys of classical music with the magic of mime to excite the imagination, fill the senses, and stimulate thought.

Offers music from an all-Los Angeles-band roster of the Happy Hollows, Voxhaul Broadcast, Useless Keys, The Lonely Wild, Walking Sleep and Slang Chickens.

Several interactive animal education and conservation stations will be located throughout the Zoo, each staffed by Zoo Docents and volunteers. World Music Night focuses on international animals, Local Scene Night features animals native to California, and Classic Rock Night combines elements of both.

An eclectic array of food and beverage selections, varying on the three
nights, are available at locations throughout the Zoo, including a wine bar, fresh fruit skewers, gourmet cheese skewers, caprese skewers, Washington martinis and mashed potatoes served in martini glasses, L.A. Street Tacos (choice of chicken, carnitas and carne asada) with salsa bar, wild Alaskan salmon, soba noodle salad, Thai beef salad, Angus beef, Cajun chicken sliders, barbequed pulled pork and chicken sandwiches with cole slaw and fresh local corn on the cob, chicken satay with a crunchy Thai peanut sauce, and cucumber salad with cilantro and julienne carrots served with jasmine rice. Offered also on Local Scene Night are three kinds of “L.A. Street Dogs”: Mexican style bacon-wrapped hot dogs with sautéed peppers, onion and jalapenos; Vienna hot dogs with African wild dog barbeque sauce; and Chicago style hot dogs on a poppy seed bun with chopped onion, and tomato; and chili dogs.

Critter Club Zoo Camp for 4-5 Year Olds

The Los Angeles Zoo’s Summer ZooCamp is great for kids of all ages. Each day of ZooCamp brings new discoveries as youngsters have the time of their lives going ape over the Zoo’s amazing animals.

Through fun, safe, engaging activities, campers will trail blaze through the week. Each camp is led by specially trained, experienced staff. This adventure is one that your child will never forget. ZooCamp starts on Monday, July 5, and runs through Friday, August 27, 2010.

ZooCamp is broken down into different, age-appropriate themes such as Lights, Camera, Animals!, Furrific Felines, and Positively Primates, among others.

Lights, Camera, Animals!
It’s the magic of the movies as you spend your week exploring the amazing California animals of the silver screen! Campers will compare some of our favorite animal stars with Zoo animals while flouncing with feathered friends, surfing with sea lions, and making buddies with bears.

Primate Adventures!
Get your map and your explorer backpack for a primate adventure at the Zoo. Discover why apes and monkeys are special in this weeklong exploration of things that are different and things that are the same between primates and people.

Critter Jam
Can you boogie like bongo? Get funky like flamingo? Animals move in lots of different ways and you can too when you join us at the Zoo! This week we will move like some of our favorite animals and discover why they boogie, get funky, and jam to their own tune.

Down on the Farm
Old McDonald had a farm, and so does the Los Angeles Zoo!! Children adore farm animals, and on our farm, we have some goats, sheep and pigs. Even a miniature horse! Come on down to our farm and get up close with these noisy barnyard animals and discover all the amazing things they do!

The Hollow Trees are a “Folk Music for Families” group who use acoustic instrumentation and play upbeat Americana music.

The Hollow Trees come from an imaginary coastal town somewhere between here and there called of Nelsonville, USA. They host a popular daily public acceess show on the local station, KTHT Nelsonville Public Access.

The band is named after the Hollow Tree In the hills above Nelsonville is an Enchanted Forest, and in the middle of the Enchanted Forest, there’s a Magic Meadow, and in the middle of the Magic Meadow is the Hollow Tree. That’s where their friend Nelson lives.

Nelson is a friendly and musical creature who is a little like a raccoon, a little like a fox, and a little like a baby bear who’s wearing some white socks.
