Volunteer as a Family with TreePeople

Volunteer as a Family with TreePeople

Plant trees with the whole family with TreePeople, an environmental non-profit group that uses trees to help build a more sustainable future. Bring your entire family out for some volunteering fun and join other TreePeople volunteers to plant trees in local parks, along city streets, on school campuses and in the mountains surrounding Los Angeles.

Tree plantings are a great way to get exercise and meet people who share your desire to heal our urban environment. Every new tree helps beautify the Los Angeles region, protect our water resources and improve our air quality.

Fall though spring is the most weather-friendly time to plant new trees so now is a perfect time make a difference with the family. Kids of all ages are welcome on these volunteer journeys, but must be accompanied by a parent.

For younger kids, there’s the VolunTEEN program at the Aquarium of the Pacific, suitable for 14 – 16 year olds. Offered three times a year, kids will learn as well as give at this 80-hour program. The application process is a little competitive but the rewards that much greater. After learning about many aspects of marine life and the Pacific Ocean the kids then share this information with guests at interactive stations in each gallery.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities at the Los Angeles Zoo

Teen Volunteer Opportunities at the Los Angeles Zoo

Is your teenager already an animal lover? The Los Angeles Zoo Student Volunteer program is open to high school students currently in if the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade and the spring. Students participate in a 13 week class, meeting on Sundays and learning about conservation, ecology, and abbreviated taxonomy of the animals at the Zoo.

Upon completion of the class, students are then eligible to participate in the Roots & Shoots program, some educational opportunities for visitors, as well as most General Volunteer programs.

There’s also an opportunity for children as young as 13 years old to volunteer at the zoo during special events the Zoo hosts throughout the year like the Big Bunny Spring Fling, Boo at the Zoo, and Reindeer Romp. Keep in mind that anyone under the age of 16 years of age needs to be accompanied by a parent or guardian when volunteering at the Zoo.

Many of Nick Cave’s Soundsuits are created from scavenged ordinary materials used in unexpected ways. Get ready for Valentine’s Day by transforming traditional holiday candy into an objet d’art.

Pay-By-Space parking is always available for Fowler visitors, regardless of whether the lot 4 parking kiosk is staffed! Automated pay stations in Pay-By-Space accept $1 and $5 bills and credit cards. The parking fee is a maximum of $10. The Fowler is visible to your left when you ascend from the elevator or stairs (follow pedestrian walkways, indicated by arrows on the map below).

The Fowler is a nice walk from the UCLA Transit Center at Hilgard and Strathmore Avenues, where several public bus lines stop.

filipino fashionDon’t miss this free family festival and celebrate the Filipino culture! Enjoy performances, hands-on crafts, demonstrations, free museum admission and more as we celebrate the vibrant arts and culture of the Philippines. Fun for all ages!

The event also offers free admission to the museum galleries, where you can check out the current exhibit “Fashioning Domesticity, Weaving Desire: Visions of the Filipina”. The exhibition explores the canonical visions of the early to mid 20th-century Filipina as civilized and/or wild. Through the juxtaposition of traditional textiles and ethnographic photography, as well as objects of personal adornment and popular print culture, this exhibition addresses the fashioning of domesticity and the weaving of desire as political strategies of polarization. Interrogating the body as a (dis)embodied landscape activated by the braided contexts of colonialism and democracy, the exhibition acknowledges that central to this binary of conquest and governance is the co-existence, reflection, and collision of the “modern” and “primitive.”
