Crash Course in Social Networking for Parents

Get to Know Your Kids, Their Way

I’ve heard that the best way to know your kids best is to know what they are into, what they read and who they associate with.  But if Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, You Tube and Flickr sound like a foreign language to you, you’ve got a bit of catching up to do to be in the know about what your kids are most likely up to.  Thanks to the gals over at New City Entertainment, there’s a free workshop you can attend that will give you a crash course in social media and help you understand social networking that’s all the rage today.  At L.A. Kid Stuff, we even gave you our very own tips on Twittering and how it can make you a cool parent, at least in your kids’ eyes!   Check out this free workshop this week, and the two that will take place at TBD locations next week will be free too.  So check the New City Entertainment website for more information then.

A Parent’s Guide to Social Media includes 2 hours of social media explanation, review, and recommendations for you as a parent.  The locations vary and New City is available for private consultation as well if desired.

Indoor Play Areas with Wi-Fi for Parents!

Healthy Indoors

Our thoughts are with the firefighters and homeowners who are battling the devastating fires that are ravaging the forests and homes in the northern part of Los Angeles. We are also thinking about all of our L.A. Kids, who, due to poor air quality and excessive heat are relegated to the indoors, for their own health and safety. We have put together a list of indoor options and playgrounds that may help parents in providing their kids their much needed activity while keeping them as safe as possible. All of these locations also have wireless internet service, for parents who need to do double duty and work while the kids are occupied.

Indoor Activity and Play Areas with

Perch yourself and your child in any number of seating areas including the kids section and get lost in the magic of books. Many libaries have free storytimes, arts activities and performances. Cool Public Libraries

Library Love

Recently my daughter Jude and I traveled to the Pasadena Central library for a used book sale. Entering the library from the back parking lot, we wound our way around some cozy book stacks and through a small hallway when pasadena-librarysuddenly the grand lobby revealed itself and our senses willingly surrendered to the magnificent sight of the four-story ceiling and detailed craftsman features, the smells of aged oak, paper and ink and the sounds (or silence) that only a historic library could provide. It was our first visit to this library and we were both awestruck. I had inkling that Jude really liked it there, especially the cool kids’ room with its endless collections, large fireplace, mini furniture and leather reading couches perfect for parent and child. I was certain she loved it when, after requesting juice (lately her favorite beverage) and learning we would have to get in the car and drive away to buy it, she said never mind, I wanna go back inside. ‘Library’ label aside the 130,000 square-foot Mediterranean building designed by Myron Hunt and HC Chambers, architects of the Huntington Library, is itself worth a visit. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the library contains either original or replicas of original furniture and features, all of which contribute to the charm and romance of the wonders waiting to be discovered in the library’s books.

It’ll probably be a while before Jude is actually reading, but I’m excited that she can appreciate the library as a destination as well as the valuable contents inside it. Before we left we signed up for a library card that will be honored at all Pasadena and Glendale city libraries and is our easy access to books, magazines, dvds, cds and wi-fi internet access whenever we visit. If you haven’t already, we hope you check out your local library and sign up for a library card because September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month! As you know, L.A. Kid Stuff regularly lists the fun, enriching and free events at public libraries. Here’s a list of some historic and beautiful libraries to give you an added reason to explore them.

Pasadena Central Library

285 E Walnut St
Pasadena, CA 91101-1598
(626) 744-4066

Los Angeles Central Library

630 W. 5th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90071
(213) 228-7000

The magnificent Los Angeles Main Library is a destination unto itself. With so many things available at this one location, you can easily pack the kids, pack a lunch and spend the good part of a Saturday enjoying one of their free programs, taking a docent led tour of the art and architecture of the building, lunching in the outdoor Maguire Gardens and of course getting lost in the extensive collections. (MORE)

Cahuenga Branch Library

4591 West Santa Monica Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90029
(323) 664-6418

This library is one of the few remaining and operating Carnegie libraries in Los Angeles. Andrew Carnegie is popularly known as the patron saint of libraries because of the millions of dollars of his personal wealth that he donated to the development of public libraries in the early 20th century. Many of the Carnegie libraries across the United States have been demolished, (MORE)

Ocean Park Branch Library

2601 Main Street
Santa Monica, CA 90405
(310) 392-3804

If you’ve walked down Main Street in Santa Monica chances are you’ve seen the Classical Revival building set back from a small front lawn with quaint benches. In 1977 the city Landmarks Commission declared the Ocean Park Branch a Cultural Heritage Monument. (MORE)

South Pasadena Public Library

1100 Oxley Street
South Pasadena, CA 91030
(626) 403-7340

The Community Room portion of the existing structure, that now makes up the Community Room, was the entrance to the historic library. The City of South Pasadena expanded and remodeled this Carnegie Library in1982, (MORE)

West Los Angeles Regional Branch Library

11360 Santa Monica Boulevard
Los Angeles, 90025
(310) 575-8323

Be sure to visit this mid-century modern library before its fate is decided, for better or for worse, by the City of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Conservancy is currently working to protect the West Los Angeles Regional branch library from possible demolition. (MORE)

AND HERE’S ONE TO ANTICIPATE

Silver Lake Branch Library

Corner of Glendale Blvd. and Silver Lake Blvd.

At L.A. Kid Stuff we are counting the days until our neighborhood Silver Lake branch Library opens its doors. With a community whose reputation for modern architecture precedes it, the Silver Lake library will step up to the plate with a steel, glass and stone design that anticipates a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. We imagine lots of natural light and an airiness that will blur the lines between indoors and out, and a destination that will be the center of many community events and gatherings. The City of Los Angeles tells us we can expect the Silver Lake library’s doors to open in mid-November this year.
