    Father’s Day Activities – June 21, 2009

    A Tribute to Dads

Writer and father Geoff Williams in a humorous article yesterday opined about how dads get the short end of the stick when it comes to Father’s Day (versus Mother’s Day) gifts.  It was poignant enough to make me feel a little bad for the guy in between chuckles.
Let’s face it though, from the moment moms hurl for the first time courtesy of morning sickness to the last excruciating push in the delivery room, dads have a lot of catching up to do.  Still, our beautiful kids wouldn’t be here without their dear dad.  And I for one will confess, there are countless endearing little things my husband does for our daughter that I couldn’t manage, like teaching her to use the fist bump as a form of affirmation… training her to adeptly maneuver the basketball “traveling” foul signal with her then 2-year-old wrists…swinging her in a makeshift towel hammock after every bath time…and encouraging her to “brush it off” instead of crying (though only when I’m not around because she is always welcome to run to me for comfort).  Truly, this is just a tiny handful.

This weekend I hope we all remember that dads need some pampering too.  So in addition to making dad breakfast in bed, take him to some of the great events happening around town.  There’s a lot to do around the city, some specifically tailored for Father’s Day and some just for fun!  Take your beach-loving or surfer dad to Malibu to help clean up the ocean for International Surfing Day then head out to Long Beach for more surfing day Beach Activities.  Take dad on a stroll down memory lane at the School House Rock! Live musical performance.  Fly kites over Silver Lake or learn to plant an organic garden with him.  If you’re near the northeast area, head over to the Chalk Festival and watch artists create masterpieces on the sidewalk, then stroll all around Pasadena for free music at the Music Festival.  In downtown L.A., appreciate culture together at the 10th anniversary of Japanese American National Museum.  If you get a little hungry, try some free donuts while making dad a book or take him on a vintage train ride complete with BBQ tri-tip lunch.  Lastly, show dad how heavenly you think he is by celebrating the Summer Soltice at Griffith Observatory where afterwards you can partake in the free exhibits and shows at the planetarium.
