Young filmmakers will learn digital filmmaking, starting with creating the storyboard to the finished film in the five days. What a great way to use the basic rudimentary skills of English, Writing and Math, and have a great time doing it!! They will also learn some stunts, stage make-up, editing, voice-over for animation, and other production skills. They will fill out daily reports and location permit requests and will rotate crew positions. These activities will allow them to discover the breadth of careers in the industry, such as costumers, actors, directors, editors, and film composers. The Advanced Film Camp is for the young filmmaker that has used a video camera before. Lunch and snacks are provided each day.

Get Kids in Shape with Summer Boot Camp, Disneyland 5K and Special Discount Offer for L.A. Kid Stuff Readers

O2 MAX Summer Boot Camp for Kids
Special Offer for L.A. Kid Stuff Readers

Recently, at the L.A. Kid Stuff dinner table, here’s how it went:

Jude (almost 3 years old):  I’m finished. I don’t want no more.
Me (mom):  Just one more spoon of your lentil soup, sweetie. Make mommy happy.
Jude (genuinely concerned):  You not happy, mommy?
Me (backpedaling, with guilt):  No, no, no, what I mean is…yes, of course I’m happy honey! Ok, you don’t have to have anymore.

Geez, I hope my kid doesn’t grow up with food issues. And body image issues. There’ll be so many other things for her to angst about. Besides, with the state of fat and BMI in this country, I’ve got the worrying covered for my whole family. A new report released by the Trust for America’s Health determined that obesity rates among kids ages 10 to 17 have tripled since 1980. And while California’s adults are the 11th lowest in the county for obesity rates, California’s youth, aged 10-17, ranked 28th in the country. So technically, our kids are collectively fatter than we are.

As naturally active as kids should be (or used to be), we now need to take measures to not just make them exercise but also encourage a love of fitness. O2 Max Summer Boot Camp for kids age 8-14 wants to help make that happen, one kid at a time. For eight weekends, your kids will train with fitness gurus and a former U.S. Marine for their grand finale: a 5K Run/Walk at Disneyland. Each 90-minute session will incorporate stretching, warming up, running or walking and include a nutrition education component and 30 minutes of fun activities that kids can do on their own at home such as obstacle courses, yoga, and ultimate Frisbee. And every session, a Board certified Pediatrician will be on hand.

“We realized that kids might not be able to get to the gym, so we thought we’d bring the workout to the kids,” says Pediatrician Tanya Arora, one of the founders of the non-profit program. And there is no better place for kids to work out than outdoors. Parents will have three convenient outdoor locations to choose from in Encino, Santa Monica and Los Angeles at Griffith Park.

The cost for the O2 Max Summer Boot Camp for kids is a tax deductible $80 for eight weeks beginning this weekend, but if you mention L.A. Kid Stuff you will get a 20% Discount making the cost $64 for the program. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the non-profit’s education efforts. We at L.A. Kid Stuff hope you consider this program for your kids. And if you have a friend who can take advantage of this program, please forward this email to them as well. Now, that would make us happy.

O2 Max Summer Boot Camp for Kids
Three locations: Fridays at Encino Balboa Park; Saturdays at Los Angeles Griffith Park; Sundays at Santa Monica Pier
Starts weekend of July 10 for eight weekends
8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Ages: 8-14
Cost: $64 for L.A. Kid Stuff referrals (registration fee applies for Disneyland 5K but O2 Max assists with fundraising or help subsidize cost)

Summer Camps and Programs that will
Up Your Parent Cool Quotient

Independence Days

Do you remember the time your child first wanted to do something on his own, or at least without your help? Recently, Jude insisted I no longer hold her up on the carousel horse where previously her regularly-placed death grip around my neck had me dizzily, but happily, bobbing up and down, going round and round. At home in the kitchen, her greatest joy and accomplishment is expertly working the salad spinner by herself until, to her liking, every last leaf is not just completely dry but also “pretty.” I knew the wretched day would come when I would have to confront budding independence, but at the wee age of three? Yes, that day has dawned. And yet as all parents know, this is just the beginning.

We’d like to wish you a Happy Independence Day by sharing a few programs that are not your standard arts and crafts day camp but are just quirky and cool enough to make any kid feel independent and very grown up. So after celebrating this Fourth of July with the customary fireworks and BBQs, consider something different by treating your child to some activities that will empower her, foster a sense of pride and ultimately independence.
