    Rediscovering Our Town Los Angeles

Summer may be almost over but it isn’t too late to take a well-deserved summer staycation. Now that cautious spending means no extravagant getaways, this is the perfect opportunity to rediscover Los Angeles. As a true local, you share this town with 10 million other people, but if you focus on some long forgotten things about this town you may find some fodder for family fun. So put on your tourist-colored glasses with L.A. Kid Stuff and let’s rediscover our city. (This is the second in a series of occasional staycation articles.)

Tours You’ll be Happy to Be Trapped In!

One of the best ways to get to know a place is to take a tour. In Los Angeles, there’s no shortage of specialty jaunts that will both entertain and educate you along the way. One of them even feeds you. Take a journey around town with people who specialize in knowing all the intimate details of a specific topic. Check out the following quirky excursions that are all family-friendly.

    Melting Pot Food Tours

Discover the cuisine of the many different cultures represented by Los Angelenos from more than 140 countries around the world at this delightful culinary tasting tour. The Undiscovered Chinatown Tour

Even without a tour, L.A. Chinatown is an adventure unto itself. On this excursion, visit a temple, an herbal shop, art galleries, antique stores, and more when guided to the unique treasures–not to mention great bargains–to be found in Chinatown. The 2 1/2 -hour walking tour will be offered on the first Saturday of every month and will take visitors to a number of off-the-beaten-track points of interest, and will guide those interested in shopping to some of Chinatown’s best bargains and its trendiest shops. L.A. Conservancy Walking Tours

We’ve already touted the cool Union Station Family Tour given by the L.A. Conservancy where kids are specifically catered to on this visit to the historic Train Station and its impressive architecture that any train fan will love. But this is just the beginning of what the L.A. Conservancy has to offer and share in the way of Los Angeles history. Also on our to do list is the Art Deco walking tour throughout downtown Los Angeles that visits the fabulous Oviatt Building and Southern California Edison Company Building among many other landmarks. Delectable edibles from Italy, Himalaya, India, Mexico are just a sampling what awaits you on a three-and-half-hour walking tour in either Pasadena or the original Farmers Market. Sisters Lisa and Diane opened up shop a year ago and will share both local favorites and best kept secrets on this gastronomic adventure. You will be walking (albeit on flat terrain), so if you bring your kids, bear this in mind. Strollers may be necessary for the little ones, just in case. The $49 ticket price includes coffee, water and food tastings all along the way, enough to fill most people. Tickets for kids ages 7-12 are $25. Children under age 7 are free if they will not eat along the way.

Hot Spots on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Want to check out some stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Start at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, where you can marvel at the Chinese Imperial architecture while your kids get a kick out of placing their hands and feet in the cement impressions of Hollywood heavyweights like Marilyn Monroe, George Clooney and the Harry Potter cast. Then segue to the stars in the sidewalks. Your little fairy fans will have to wait awhile until Tinkerbell actually schedules a date to accept her star on the Walk of Fame (which we’ve learned has already been offered to her) but take a leisurely stroll directly to these locations to see some other famous stars your kids will recognize, and some Hollywood legends just for the parents.
