A day-long celebration of hands-on fun, entertainment and interactive programs geared towards children and families!  School’s Out! is one of a series of centennial events leading up to the Pier’s grand Centennial Celebration on September 9th. The first official day of summer vacation for many area students, School’s Out! commemorates the Pier’s 100 years as a source of unending fun and entertainment for children and families from across California and beyond.
School’s Out! will host a variety of activities and shows for families and kids of all ages including the following performances and/or activities:
• Youth Guide to the Historic Santa Monica Pier: (All Day) Kids will follow an interactive guide, created specifically for the Pier’s Centennial celebration that will navigate around the Pier and let them experience the rich history of the past 100 years. Made possible by a generous grant from the Sempra Energy Foundation.
• Cirque du Soleil “Circus Play Area”: (11am – 4pm) Learn from circus arts trainers how to balance broomsticks and other objects, juggle, tumble, walk a tightrope or just get your face painted. Cirque du Soleil returns to the Santa Monica Pier in October with KOOZA. www.cirquedusoleil.com
• Santa Monica Puppetry Center: (12pm – 4pm) Kids will enjoy the center’s “Puppetolio” puppet shows at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm, as well as sock puppet-making workshops. www.puppetmagic.com
• Drumtime*: (11am – 12:30 pm) Kids can bang the morning away in a drum circle. Drumtime programs are designed to offer children and teens hands-on experiences in healthy mind and body concepts, non-hierarchical social paradigms, self-empowerment, interconnectedness and achievement. www.drumtime.net
• Movies By Kids: (11am – 2pm) At the “Movies By Kids Studio”, kids will learn to create movies during a mini-workshop with their own ideas and sets built from Legos and will operate all the equipment to bring real animations to the big screen. www.moviesbykids.com
• Precision Los Angeles: (11am – 2pm) Kids will learn how to explore new kinds of movement as they imitate different animals, plants and objects through Creative Movement Exercises. The “Going Upside Down” workshop teaches kids balance whether they’ve ever done a headstand or not. Performances by the “Shmackin 5” take place at 11:45am and 1:00pm. www.precisionlosangeles.com
• Kids On Stage: (11:30am – 2pm) Young actors can explore their imagination and flex their drama skills with Kids On Stage, a premiere performing arts and video company for children ages 10 months – 18 years. Theatre games, improvisation, story-telling, and skits are just some of the activities kids will experience. www.kidsonstage.com
• rediscover: (11am – 2pm) reDiscover starts summer off with a splash by making fish and other sea creatures from recycled materials. reDiscover promotes creativity in early childhood and elementary education while encouraging environmental responsibility. www.rediscovercenter.org
• Broadway Gymnastics*: (11am – 2pm) Kids aged 3-10 years can climb, jump and tumble through our interactive gymnastics obstacle course. All programs at Broadway Gymnastics are educationally based and offer a wide variety of physical education services. www.broadwaygym.com
• Heal the Bay’s Santa Monica Pier Aquarium: (11am – 4pm) Kids can interact with more than 100 local species of the Santa Monica Bay, view wildlife at the marine observation station on the Pier’s west end, get up close to tide-pool animals at the “touch tank” and visit the Aquarium for arts, crafts and on-going displays. www.healthebay.org/smpa
• YogaBuddies*: (12pm – 2pm) Kids can learn a calming breathing technique to do before bed and lots of yoga poses that will help kids stretch, strengthen, focus and be calm. YogaBuddies has been in operation since 2004 and has provided yoga instruction to more than 3,000 children. www.yogabuddies.com
• Rock Nation School: (12pm – 4pm) The next generation of rock stars will perform live at 12pm and 3pm. Kids can also participate in a e-jam session, mini guitar lesson or compete in Guitar Hero. Rock Nation is a music community built of core values that fosters friendship and hard work, with a passion to develop “great” musicians of all-ages while having fun in the process. www.rocknationschool.com
• A Creative Space*: (12:30pm) A Creative Space/Playhouse presents a short Rock and Roll Musical Version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Nights Dream” acted by our young players. Fairies, Goblins, Magic Spells, Classic Rock, and High Comedy make this adaptation fun for the whole family. www.a-creative-space.com
• Steve Rushton: (1:30pm – 2pm) With a cameo in “Hannah Montana: The Movie,” two songs on that film’s soundtrack and a Radio Disney hit of his own, Steve Rushton is breezing along on a career fast track. His song “Ready to Rock” is the single and video tie-in with the Walt Disney Pictures/ Jerry Bruckheimer film GFORCE in theatres July 24th. “Ready to Rock” will be available on iTunes July 15th. • The Jump Squad*: (2pm – 4pm) creates a fun, exciting and engaging environment where jumpers learn the fundamentals and advanced techniques of jump rope and double-dutch. Creative expression and confidence is encouraged in “the ropes” where physical fitness and pure enjoyment occurs naturally. www.thejumpsquad.org
• Trapeze School New York: (2pm – 4pm) Kids can refine their hula hoop skills or swing on a mini trapeze. Trapeze School New York is dedicated to making flying trapeze available to anyone who seeks inspiration, challenge, fitness or just a couple hours of unique fun. www.newyork.trapezeschool.com
• Groovaloos: (2pm – 4pm) The winners of NBC’s “Superstars of Dance” come together in Groovaloos, a high-energy hip-hop and freestyle dance happening that tells their personal journeys as it showcases their athletic dance moves. The show will be at the El Portel Theater in North Hollywood August 21-30. On 6/20 the Groovaloos perform on the main stage at 2:15pm and 3:45pm for School’s Out as well as teach some of their signature “moves”. www.groovaloo.com
• Daytime Dance Party: (4pm – 5pm) Dance your way out of the event and enjoy the rest of what the Santa Monica Pier has to offer.
